Sam Houston, Texas, the location of the Brooks Hospital Burn Center. In his own words he describes an experience which has driven him to develop BurnAway Plus™.
"One night in July, 1964 I received a call on the Military Police radio that a small child was coming in by helicopter. It was a 5-year old girl who was burned on 70% of her body. As we opened the door to the helicopter, I saw how badly this little girl was burned. I cried for her in my heart. Bud, my partner, and I took her out of the helicopter and into the Brooks Hospital, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. Inside I asked a nurse what they would give her for pain. Her answer was water and Morphine. I told the nurse that water was a cooling agent and Morphine distorted pain. I asked the doctor the same question and he gave me the same answer. As I walked outside I said to myself, 'Please, God, let me help with pain.' The small child died 5 days later. I prayed for her and the family, and that someday maybe I could make something to help children and relieve the pain caused by burns."
